The independent living venture for young adults

Often, as young adults, we assume that we can muscle through the challenges and get what we want: an education, work, friends, and maybe a partner. We look forward to the freedom of choice that we now being 18 years old or older. We have it but it isn’t as easy as we may have thought. Loneliness, frustration, and anxiousness about our future surface as we move into being on our own.

As young people become excited for this transition, gaps often reveal themselves as efforts come up empty handed. Sometimes they are seen in poor grades, difficulty managing money, having a hard time connecting with others, or experience an increase in drug and alcohol use. This is an important transition. Parents rely on what once were effective ways of support but are no longer applicable to the needs of the transforming young adult child. The young adult child and the parents need support.

Understanding what is taking place and the different kinds of resources parents and the young adult can draw on make for an effective transition. It isn’t always easy, but growing up often isn’t. We have to let go of inappropriate expectations and accept what our current reality is.

Growing to be an effective and empowered young person requires hard work and constant attention. We had mentors through the centuries to guide the young person in learning a trade, figuring out how to deal with conflict, or have someone to model after because the young person appreciated the values the mentor demonstrated.

Making the transition from adolescent to young adult is no easy feat. ATG professionals know about transitions for families. Our staff have worked in programs and have run successful ventures in guiding and caring for families in these kinds of transitions. We provide interactive support, guidance and other resources to empower everyone that lasts a lifetime.
